Chess magazines seem to be going the way of newspapers in these Internet days, but NEW IN CHESS keeps rolling along. Now in its 27th anniversary, the Dutch magazine has made a welcome change shifting from its traditional 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 format to a more generous 10 1/2 by 8 1/2 (the same size as Chess Life). This new look allows for an easier to read font size, more generous margins and larger photographs. Otherwise the winning formula of in-depth tournament reports, deeply annotated games, interviews, book reviews, great photos and more continues.
Issue 1 of 2011 is arguably the best ever with highlights including an interview with Grandmaster (and former IMF Chief Economist) Ken Rogoff, annotated games by Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Viswanathan Anand, Vugar Gashimov, Paco Vallejo, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karajakin, Vladimir Malakhov, Loek Van Wely and Hou Yifan, book reviews by Jonathan Rowson, a tribute to Larry Evans by Jimmy Adams, Jan Timman’s regular column and more.
