The Ukrainian duo of GMs Alexander Beliavsky and Adrian Mikhalchisin, who have long made Slovenia their home, have co-authored many books over the years. Their latest, THE PETROSIAN SYSTEM AGAINST THE QID, is a comprehensive and well-organized guide to 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.a3. The 12 chapters each start out with an overview of the strategical ideas for both sides and cover all of Black’s tries – 4...c5, 4...Ba6 and the bulk to 4...Bb7 5.Nc3 when the second player may choose between 5...Ne4, 5...g6 and the main lines beginning with 5...d5.

Petrosian’s prophylactic system no longer enjoys the huge popularity it experienced back in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Garry Kasparov, for one, scored many beautiful wins, but it is still a formidable weapon. Those interested in employing the “Tiger’s” answer to the Nimzo/Queens Indian complex will find THE PETROSIAN SYSTEM AGAINST THE QID just what they need.
