RAMPANT CHESS is a collection of games played by 13 Scottish Masters annotated with an emphasis on being instructive and entertaining. Each GM or IM annotates his or her selection of five of their games, assisted by the editors. Preceding the games is a checklist of questions, both chess related and otherwise, answered by each contributor.
The Scottish masters who contributed to RAMPANT CHESS in their order of appearance are:
GM Jacob Aagaard
IM Mark Condie
IM Keti Arakhamia-Grant
GM Paul Motwani
IM Douglas Bryson
IM Andrew Muir
IM Eddie Dearing
IM Craig Pritchett
IM Steve Mannion
GM Jonathan Rowson
IM Roddy McKay
GM John Shaw
GM Colin McNab
I found the games and annotations to be on a consistently high level. Even the IM’s games feature strong opposition – examples being Andrew Muir’s win over Gata Kamsky and Roddy McKay’s defeat of Vlastimil Hort in his prime. Amazingly for a collection of games on this level, the annotations can be pretty much “read” as prose. This counts for at least 90 percent of the commentary, making this book particularly accessible for club level players. Those who enjoy good game collections, words over variations and a healthy dose of Scottish humor will find RAMPANT CHESS a winner. All money raised from the sale of this book goes to Chess Scotland.
