REYKJAVIK RAPID 2004: KASPAROV VICTORIOUS

A strong field duked it out March 17th to the 21st. In this event, those losing their two game mini-matches (25 minutes each with five seconds a move added) were knocked out of the tournament.

First round results:

Kasparov over M Carlsen by 1.5 - .5

Short over S. Kristjansson by 1.5 -.5

Karpov over H. Stefansson by 1-1 (1-0 in the blitz playoff)

Timman over Hjartarson by 1.5 - .5

Aronian over H. Olafsson by 2-0

Dreev over Petursson by 1.5 - .5

Sutovsky over Nataf by 1.5 - .5

P.H. Nielsen over Epishin by 2-0

Kasparov’s first round victory was anything but easy, since he was actually losing to the youngster in the first game (though he managed a draw then won the second).

ROUND TWO: Karpov spoiled a winning position and ended up losing his match to Dreev (1.5 - .5).

Short moved on to the next round by taking out Aronian (1.5 - .5). His game with Black is notable since he played in important theoretical novelty in the Trompowsky.

After making an easy draw as Black, Kasparov mowed down Timman to advance.

ROUND THREE: This round featured two very tough matches, with Kasparov facing Peter Heine Nielsen (who won Hastings in 2003) and Short matching wits against the extremely solid Dreev.

Kasparov vs. Nielsen: The former World Champion wasn’t able to achieve anything in the first two games and this forced the match into overtime. Kasparov had White in the third game and, as in the first two, his opponent achieved a solid position. However Nielsen was the first to crack under the pressure, made a material-losing mistake, and lost both game and match.

Short vs. Dreev: The first game featured a not too interesting draw. In the second Short played his favorite Advanced Variation against Dreev’s favorite Caro-Kann. A long, difficult battle ensued with Short eventually coming out on top.

ROUND FOUR: The final between Short and Kasparov almost seemed a continuation of their wild and wooly 1993 World Championship match where Short would go after Kasparov’s Sicilian with all guns blazing. However, even though he would often build up good or even winning positions, the Englishman would still end up on the short end of the stick.

Here too he pounced on Kasparov’s Najdorf and achieved an extremely promising, perhaps even winning, game. Kasparov though, held tough and, after Short missed some chances and continued playing for a win even when he should have grabbed the draw, the tide turned. This victory as Black more or less ended matters in favor of Kasparov, and it was Short fighting for a draw (and eventually getting it) in the final game.

5th KARPOV TOURNAMENT: GRISCHUK WINS ON TIEBREAKS

This powerful tournament was held from the 17th to the 26th of March. Though Rublevsky went into the last round with a half point lead, he could only draw Zvjaginsev in the final game while Grischuk defeated Zhang Zhong. This led to a first place tie between Grischuk and Rublevsky, but tie breaks favored the former.

Final results: 1st - 2nd Grischuk and Rublevsky (6 pts), 3rd & 4th Bologan and Sokolov (5.5 pts), 5th Zvjaginsev (5 pts), 6th Onischuk (4.5 pts), 7th Lautier (4 pts), 8th & 9th Aleksandrov and Zhang Zhong (3.5 pts), 10th Malakhov (1.5 pts).

KASPAROV’S ILLEGAL VANISHING ACT

John Donaldson Reports:

GM Alex Baburin in the excellent online daily Chess Today (http://www.chesstoday.net) recently shared some information about some strange incidents involving Kasparov at Linares.

Dmitry Komarov in the Ukrainian newspaper Facty told a story about a little known aspect of the recent Linares tournament. Below is our translation of his text (in Russian): "A real detective story happened in the last rounds of the Super tournament in Linares. According to Silvio Danailov, manager of Ruslan Ponomariov, when playing against Vallejo, Kasparov before making his move suddenly stood up and left the playing hall. He did the same the day before when he played against Topalov.

In accordance with the rules such behavior is strictly prohibited because of the possible computer assistance and is punished with a defeat. The arbiters noticed Kasparov's strange maneuver and asked the girl who was working in the press center to follow him. Garry went to his hotel room and stayed there for about fifteen minutes. Coming back he explained to the arbiters that he had had to take some medicine urgently. The arbiters gave Kasparov just a warning, while at the last European Team Championship Ponomariov lost a full point for a lesser offense – an accidental mobile phone call."

It's not at all clear that Kasparov was cheating, but can you imagine what his reaction would be if one of his opponents left the board for an extended period of time without consulting an arbiter? Though unquestionably one of the greatest, if not the greatest player of all time, Kasparov is not likely to be remembered as having great board manners. One only has to recall his actively utilized repertoire of facial grimaces and the incident with Judit Polgar where he violated the touch move rule.

NEW U.S. CHAMPIONSHIP DATES

The 2004 U.S. Championships will take place November 25th - December 5th at the Hilton Torrey Pines, La Jolla San Diego, California.

America’s Foundation for Chess (AF4C) and their co-sponsor the NTC Foundation expect to maintain its $250,000 prize fund along with corporate sponsor Chessmaster®.

Already half of the 64-player field has been seeded directly into the championship as the nation’s top players on the February 2004 United States Chess Federation Rating List, or have won through by qualifying from the 2003 cycle of major U.S. tournaments. Next month sees the start of the 2004 qualifying cycle with a further 32-players looking to do battle over the chessboard in the coming months for the honor of completing the line-up.  Further details of who has qualified so far and which events make-up the 2004 cycle can be found at http://www.af4c.org/events.asp.

The event offers something for chess fans and non-chess players alike. During this year’s Kids Simul event, more than 400 children will be given an opportunity to play against America’s finest chess players, with one grand master playing against 25 children at one time. Other events will range from chess demonstrations, opportunities to meet the masters and a fund-raising party.

Organized by the Armenian Chess Federation, the event was steeped in controversy due to a protest by the Georgian Chess Federation. Here is the official letter, sent to FIDE on March 11:

To the FIDE President

Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov

Cc: Azerbaijan Chess Federation

Dear Mr. President,

As you are aware, the self declared republic Mountaneous Karabakh is currently hosting a chess tournament, organized by the Armenian Chess Federation. The Organisers are using the name of the great chess player, the 9th World Champion Tigran Petrossian, who was born in Tbilisi, who has made considerable contribution into the development of the friendly relations between nations. A Georgian player B. Jobava is attending this tournament as a private person. However, notwithstanding the fact that he is not a participant, the Organisers have hung the state flag of Georgia together with the flags of participating countries. Such an unusual decision causes our utter surprise as Mr. Jobava is there not as an official representative of the Georgia Chess Federation, but as a private person.

The Chess Federation of Georgia is hereby expressing its protest against the presence of the state flag of Georgia at the tournament. It already sent its protest to the Armenian Chess Federation with the demand to take it away. We are hereby requesting to publish our position on the FIDE website.

Yours sincerely,

President

G. Chigoridze

Co President

FIDE Vice President

Z. Azmaiparashvili

CAPPELLE-LE-GRANDE: NAJER TAKES IT ON TIE-BREAKS

The Cappelle-le-Grande Open, which takes place 28th February - 6th March 2004, had 576 players. This was a real up and down affair that saw constant changes in the top position. In the end, a six-way tie for first (with 7 points out of 9) forced the tie-break gods to decide who got the nod, and this went to Evginiy Najer. All the top finishers: Najer, Kulaots, Timofeev, Gyimesi, Grigoriants, Korneev.

LINARES: KRAMNIK TAKES CLEAR FIRST

The 21st Linares tournament (taking place February 19th - March 5th 2004) is a seven-player double round robin event (average rating: 2731). The contestants (in order of rating) are: Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Alexei Shirov, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Paco Vallejo, and Teimour Radjabov.

The first round saw only one decisive game, with Leko getting off to a good start with a win over young Radjabov. The most exciting game of the round was between Shirov and Kasparov, two brilliant tacticians who went at each other with unbridled ferocity. A perpetual check resulted. The other game, between Pons and Kramnik, was a boring eighteen-move draw.

Round two saw three draws, which left Leko in the top spot. Kramnik vs. Shirov was none too exciting. Kasparov pressed against Radjabov but was held to a half point.

Scores after two: Leko  (Hungary) 1.5/2; Kasparov (Russia) 1.5/3; Kramnik (Russia) 1.5/3, Shirov  (Spain)1.5/3; Vallejo Pons (Spain) 1/2, Topalov (Bulgaria) 1/2; Radjabov  (Azerbaijan) 1/3;

The thrills just don’t stop in this event and round three continued the trend with three more draws. To be fair, Leko vs. Kasparov was an exciting Sicilian which saw both players mix it up. Shirov vs. Topalov was also hard-fought. Radjabov vs. Kramnik was a 23-move draw – thus far it seems that Kramnik is playing only to avoid defeat. Will the World Champion ever wake up?

Round four: Three more draws (Kramnik drew Leko in 18, Vallejo drew Shirov in 20). The only game of interest was Topalov vs. Radjabov (Topalov had real chances in this game). I’m beginning to wonder if there’s a shortage of coffee at this event – surely the press is imbibing huge quantities of the stuff in an effort to stay awake!

Round five: The draws keep coming (14 of the 15 games have been drawn!), though this time all the games made it past move forty. Leko vs. Topalov was a fighting Najdorf Sicilian, Kasparov tried unsuccessfully to break Kramnik, and Radjabov wasn’t able to budge Vallejo.

Round six saw Shirov catch up with tournament leader Leko (who drew with Vallejo) by beating Radjabov in a very interesting King’s Indian Defense. Topalov had a fighting draw with Kasparov. Things seem to be heating up.

Round 7 exploded with decisive results on every board. Perhaps it was something in the food, but this round saw the world’s number one (Kasparov beat Vallejo) and two (Kramnik beat Topalov) players finally waking up, and also featured a huge game between the two tournament leaders, Leko and Shirov, in which Leko prevailed and once again took the top spot alone (half a point ahead of Kasparov and Kramnik).

Round 8: After the blood-fest of the previous round, it wasn’t surprising to see quick draws in Kramink vs. Vallejo and Leko vs. Radjabov. The surprise, though, was the near loss of Kasparov to his usual “customer” Shirov. Garry somehow made a draw, but he was in very bad shape for a long time.

Round 9 saw three draws: Vallejo - Topalov and Shirov - Kramnik split the point in a fairly normal manner. However, the game Radjabov - Kasparov was quite another matter. Here Garry outplayed his young opponent, built up a winning game, and then blundered half a point away (55…Rb1 would have won).

The other two games (Radjabov - Topalov and Shirov - Vallejo) were draws, though both featured sharp, interesting openings.
